becomes the following after route transposition and keyed columnar transposition
SLOWLY DESPARATLY SLOWLY THE REMAINS OF PASSAGE DEBRIS THAT ENCUMBERED THE LOWER PART OF THE DOORWAY WAS REMOVED WITH TREMBLING HANDS I MADE A TINY BREACH IN THE UPPER LEFT HAND CORNER AND THEN WIDENING THE HOLE A LITTLE I INSERTED THE CANDLE AND PEERED IN THE HOT AIR ESCAPING FROM THE CHAMBER CAUSED THE FLAME TO FLICKER BUT PRESENTLY DETAILS OF THE ROOM WITHIN EMERGED FROM THE MIST X CAN YOU SEE ANYTHING Q (?)
The key to doing all of this is 0362514 (Kryptos – go figure) but that was only figured out after the fact.
In fact there are three different methods of solving K3 that I know of right now.
If there’s so many ways to solve it, why did it take so long?
Just leaving a thought here – a while back a posted a comment re: the raised letters forming some sort of Bacon cipher in the plaintext of K3. Can’t find that comment now.
Anyway, I had an idea that maybe the Bacon cipher was in the K3 ciphertext, not the plaintext. If you take the first 15 letters of the K3 ciphertext you get AAABB ABAAA AAAAA = DIA. Dia is Spanish for “day” (the day Howard Carter opened Tut’s tomb?) or Greek for “across” (go across to…where? The extra L?).
Or heck, if you combine with Bacon in the plaintext (see my earlier comment, if you can find it), you get DIA ERE. The day before? Go across before?
Was it this one:
Nope, that wasn’t me.
Great site! I wonder if you, or any of your readers can help me with this…
A while ago, I searched and downloaded Sanborn’s ‘original encoding charts’ for K1 and K2 from the NY times website. While looking for them on a Google images search, I came across some screen shots of a TV interview with Mr Sanborn that showed part of some charts containing K3 written out on the same squared paper as used for the K1 and K2 substitutions. Unfortunately, I didn’t keep copies and when I search now I can no longer find the K3 images. I really want them! Has anyone got copies of the K3 tables in their clue collections or know what site was/is hosting them? Thanks in advance.
That is a good question. I don’t have them but you could try the YouTube videos that kryptosinfo uploaded a couple years ago. He put up copies of some of the tv interviews Sanborn did, you might find the charts in there. Good luck!
It is probably just a coincidence that “Kryptos” is a column transposition key for the rotations used in K3 – as I think Sanborn said. The number codes (0362514) for “Kryptos” happen to have an alternating pattern. To see the pattern, repeat the numbers:
036251403625140362514 : to make it easier to see, cut some the digits off the ends…
62514036251403 and then pull out every other number…
6 5 4 3 2 1 0 and …
2 1 0 6 5 4 3
So when the rotation used a column width divisible by three and then a column width with no odd roots, it apparently injected the “every other” phenomena that could also be obtained if a keyed transposition had been used with “Kryptos”.
This indicates that “Kryptos” was not used in any way for K3. Perhaps it is not used at all in K4 either. That messes with my notion of using the Vigerner table when trying ideas on K4.
