Real Genius (1985)
It’s a lot of fun but it’s not a spy movie. Sorry!
In this movie, the CIA is a crooked government agency that controls a shadowy cabal which is only left in death (read: assassination by the CIA). They get excited about the idea of a space death laser and thus the events of the movie are set in motion. That’s it, that’s their only role. Perhaps even more disturbing is that to prepare for Real Genius, Martha Coolidge spent months researching laser technology and the policies of the CIA, and interviewed dozens of students at Caltech. That means what the movie shows about the CIA was entirely reasonable to her.
Don’t listen to the haters, it’s just a coming-of-age comedy about the gender-ambiguous Mitch seen through the lens of genius engineering students.
And they’re all trippin’ balls on Adderall.
