XXX (2002)

What would you get if James Bond and Riddick had a baby that was directed by Rob Cohen…

The witty repartee was shit on by the attempts to use “cool words that the kids use”.  The NSA in XXX is the CIA of the 60’s.  Samuel L Jackson is Nick Fury and Vin Diesel just plays a Mountain Dew ad of Dominic Toretto.  The music is nice and the crappy Eastern European feel comes across strongly.

And yet it is a refreshing take on the normal man turned spy.  Usually we find out they have latent inherent abilities that surface at the right moments to propel them to super spy or superhero ability that wows the establishment.  Instead we have someone who does all of these things as a hobby and has this latent inherent altruism that surfaces at the right moment to keep the movie going.  And Asia Argento isn’t that hot.

I hate to say it because I like both but XXX is the nu metal of spy movies.  It’s fun and everyone secretly enjoys it but can be awkward and most critics give it the thumbs down.
