Hey there! Thanks for dropping by Kryptos - Beyond K4! Take a look around and grab the RSS feed to stay updated. See you around!
These are after an attempt to strip SCHEIDT-SANBORN from a K4 arranged in sequential 7×7 grids.
Think this could be anywhere near:
(Above method non-relating. I’d email you but there doesn’t seem to be a contact link so I have to troll your other posts, sorry.)
a) It isn’t 97 characters long.
b) Berlin is not in positions 64-69.
Other than these flaws, you’re unlikely to get a “Yes, that’s it!” response on here, or anywhere else, as no-one knows the solution except Jim Sanborn, and he isn’t telling. The repetition of GHOST(S)OFABE is interesting though – does this come from a repeating sequence?
Thank God for Arthur. The voice of reason.
Trust me Pete, if Arthur isn’t convinced then it is back to the drawing board.
All of his posts on this website are honest and very enlightening.
Does anyone know about the Sanborn Kryptos submission website. It has nearly been a year since it was shut down.
Rumour is that someone has solved it and that is why the site is not going to put up again.
Thanks Tracy. The word from the man himself is that he received too many frivolous, hostile or debasing submissions that took up too much of his time, so he shut the site down.
If you think you have the first ten, you can email him but you need to send $50 if you want a reply.
Where did the rumour that someone solved it come from? Was it an assumption made because the site was shut down?
I think he would announce it if it were solved, although that’s also an assumption. He’d have to hide it from Elonka Dunin, for one thing. In the Eurogamer article from earlier this year she said that he wants it solved, so I can’t see him hiding it if it has been.
I completely balls’d up the config. On holiday at the mo’, thought I’d leave my reply from memory (also slightly baked) and it didn’t work out as well as I’d hoped. I’ll check my paperwork when I get home. The letters do check out in the right places, with my work in place, no Sangria or Purple Haze. Get back in a couple of weeks!
P.S. In the meantime, recount the letters. I’m a bit tipsy but I count 97 letters & Berlin @64
Oh, perhaps my dismissal of your solution was premature. I think the site has cropped the text, try posting it on four or five separate lines.
Ok, I have done it for you:
My dismissal was not premature after all. Sorry Pete, this is nonsense. “Berlin is the ghost of a better future?”. What does this mean? How would it be the “start of the puzzle” as Sanborn said?
I think if you were to submit your first ten of OBKRUOXOTH you might incur Sanborn’s ire, as only two of these letters are different than the ciphertext.
Correction – only one is different!
I was wondering if you could explain something for me.
How were the Morse code slates cracked without knowing the spacing of the morse?
Was it just trial and error of trying every letter until something stuck or was there a more efficient way of decoding the Morse that I can’t work out?
There just seems to be so many possibilities.
Sorry if this is a stupid question but I can’t seem to find any answers to this. Especially if you figure that you could read them upside down.
Thanks for any help.
Abe, the spacing between the Morse letters is the same width as three dots, which is the recognised standard. The space between each dot or dash within the same letter is one dot. Jim Gillogy’s photographs show this clearly, and you can find them at http://www.voynich.net/Kryptos/
The exceptions to this are the extraneous Es (single dots) that appear to have about 5 dots spacing.
Thank you so much Arthur. If I can barely get the Morse Code not much chance of getting K4. 🙂
I hope you have more success.
I should post it in layersof five? What are you all doing here?!
Allow me to pontificate, if you will:
I came on here in a bid to find out who is worthy of working with on this. I found, after i posted my text from memory, under the influence of a lot of alcohol, that I could count better than the best guy here.
That guy didn’t have the sense to think why I may or may not have left the first and last few lettersthe same.Nobody as yet has even cocontemplated *how*i got my answer, and it seems, above,Arthurleft a victory dancereminiscent of a 21 year old who just scored a pissing point in a high school cryptocontest. You can’thelp people who are actually close to figuring this out because you aren’t cryptanalysts. I havent seen any algebra which has remotely made my balls tingle let alone impress me into thinking you guys have a shot. You’ve been wrong from the start, very wrong, and you’restill getting thingswrong.
If i were you, boys, I’d give up. You’repaddling way outside the fun pool 😉
I have all the answers i need from here. I’m takingmy primitive roots elsewhere.
I thought your proposed solution was incorrect because the text was cropped on my 1024×768 monitor, so your proposed solution appeared to end with OFABE.
Sanborn said “I would have to refresh my memory as to what I wrote”, which led me to believe he wrote the plaintext of K4 himself, instead of copying it verbatim from an essay written by Ernst Bloch, and reproduced over on Tim Ognisty’s site at kryptosblog.com.
I don’t think it will be solved by taking any sentences you like from the internet that contain “Berlin” and shuffling them so that that word is in the right place. One could take the Lonely Planet guide to Berlin, or the Wikipedia page for Leonhard Euler and claim a solution to K4, or the lyrics to a Leonard Cohen song….et cetera. It’s crazy.
I agree people are often too dismissive of ideas that don’t fit with a pre-conceived notion of Kryptos. I’m interested in how you came to your answer, as it seems that it is a method others haven’t considered.
